When I discovered Imagido sold multicoloured metallic chips they instantly reminded me of Christmas baubles. The colourful transparent discs have metal rims and can be used with a magnet. With Christmas around the corner I thought it was the perfect excuse to use them in a Christmas themed play activity.

As Adam is confident with his letter sounds, we have been working on matching lowercase letters with uppercase letters. We first introduced the concept with our Alphabet Apple Matching game, which Adam thoroughly enjoyed. For today’s activity I created an Alphabet Magnetic Christmas Tree.
Our packet of metallic chips came from Imagido and contain 100 chips in a packet. We only needed 26 for our activity. Using a permanent marker pen, I wrote the uppercase letters onto the chips.
As our rainbow chips are magnetic I decided to add an additional element to the activity. Instead of placing the uppercase letters on top of the lowercase Adam had to use the magnetic wand to move the items. I placed the Twinkl Christmas Tree board onto a baking tray.
Moving the magnetic uppercase letters proved easier said than done. The magnetic wand was very powerful and when it was placed on top of the baking tray it picked up any magnetic chips that were close by. So we improvised and placed the wand underneath the baking tray. The activity works best if you limit the number of chips already on the baking tray.
Despite finding the wand tricky to maneuver, Adam enjoyed matching the uppercase to the lowercase letters before seeing how many chips he could get onto the magnetic wand at once! Science and literacy combined in one activity.
